Inboard steering ball joint or axial ball joint | Connected by the steering link which is the arm that connects the rack to the tie rod carrier | Consists of the outer steering ball joint and the inner steering ball joint or axial ball joint. If the steering knuckle is connected to the tie rod carrier, the inner knuckle is connected to the rack and protected by a steering bellows.

These parts articulate with each other to guarantee the steering of the vehicle's wheels and thus ensure perfect behaviour of the front axle.

Uncomfortable, soft or noisy steering is a clear sign of a fault in one or more of the ball joints in the steering system. It is very important to check the system as a whole to determine which ball joints need to be replaced. It is often necessary to remove the protective bellows to check the amount of play in the inner ball joint. A relatively hard bump of a wheel against the kerb can twist the steering linkage and cause the parallelism to become misaligned, resulting in very rapid tyre wear or, in the worst case, rendering the steering unusable.
